PHILADELPHIA, (May 1, 2008) – PECO has chosen 15 municipalities across the Greater Philadelphia region to receive $110,000 in grant funding as part of the PECO Green Region program for projects focusing on open space preservation, improvements to parks and recreation resources, and conservation. Since the inception, PECO has provided nearly a half million dollars toward qualifying projects.
In partnership with Natural Lands Trust, the region’s largest land conservation organization, PECO will award grants to the following municipalities: Doylestown, $5,200; Lower Southampton, $9,800; and Middletown, $10,000, in Bucks County; Kennett Square, $10,000, South Coventry, $9,900, and West Brandywine, $5,100, in Chester County; Bethel, $5,000, Newtown, $7,500, Ridley Park, $7,500, and Swarthmore, $5,000, in Delaware County; Abington, $7,500, Cheltenham, $5,000, Pottstown, $5,000, and Worcester, $7,500, in Montgomery County; and City of Philadelphia, $10,000.
Municipalities may apply for a Green Region grant of up to $10,000 per project each year. A committee with representatives from PECO, its parent Exelon, county agencies and conservation organizations reviews each application and selects the projects to receive funding.
“PECO is proud to support programs that improve our environment and the quality of life for our customers,” said Denis O’Brien, PECO president and CEO. “It is pleasing to know that by working together we can identify ways to improve the environment throughout the region.”
