CHICAGO (April1, 2008) With spring finally here, ComEd encourages customers to remember safety as they participate in seasonal activities, and to visit ComEdCARE.com for low-cost ways to reduce energy usage and save money.
According to the National Safety Council, homeowners are seven times more likely to be injured at home than at work. To prevent accidents or injuries while spring cleaning or landscaping, ComEd offers these electric safety tips for working inside and outside of the home.
Work Safely Outdoors
- Always keep people, equipment and moveable items at least 10 feet away from power lines.
- Be aware of power lines that run through tree limbs and branches.
- Contractors and other professionals needing to work within 10 feet of a power line should call 800-Edison1 (800-334-7661) in advance to make arrangements to have ComEd protect the work area.
- Use extension cords marked for outdoor use.
- Whether planting a tree, building a fence or laying a building foundation, contact with an underground power line can be fatal. Before digging or driving equipment into the ground, contact the appropriate one-call system at least 48 hours before working. The service will contact the appropriate utilities, which will come out and mark their underground facilities.
- Within the Chicago city limits call: DIGGER (the Chicago Utility Alert Network) at (312) 744-7000. Outside the Chicago city limits call: JULIE (the Joint Utility Locating for Excavators) at (800) 892-0123 or visit the Web site (www.illinois1call.com).
