Nuclear energy plants in the United States are licensed to operate for 40 years. The 40-year license term reflects the amortization period generally used by electric utility companies for large capital investments. Byron Unit 1’s original license continues through 2024 and Unit 2’s license continues through 2026. With license renewal, Byron Generating Station Unit 1 and Unit 2 will be able to produce clean, low-cost energy until 2044 and 2046.

A Reliable Energy Source
Byron Generating Station is an always-on, stable source of electricity. Reliability can be measured by capacity factor, which is the amount of electricity actually produced compared with how much electricity would be produced if the plant operated at full capacity, 100 percent of the time. Byron’s average combined capacity factor was 89.7 percent in 2012.
