License Renewal

Exelon Nuclear submitted a license renewal application for Byron Generating Station to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) because we are committed to producing clean, safe and reliable energy for Illinois homes and businesses well into the future.

Nuclear energy plants in the United States are licensed to operate for 40 years.  The 40-year license term reflects the amortization period generally used by electric utility companies for large capital investments.  The Atomic Energy Act of 1954 permits nuclear plants to renew their operating licenses.  Learn more about the NRC license renewal process.

Byron Unit 1’s original license continues through 2024 and Unit 2’s license continues through 2026. With license renewal, Byron Generating Station Unit 1 and Unit 2 will be able to produce clean, low-cost energy until 2044 and 2046.

A Clean Energy Source

Byron Generating Station is a clean energy source in Illinois, producing enough electricity to power more than two million homes each year without producing greenhouse gas emissions during its operations.

A Safe Energy Source

Byron Generating Station invests in its equipment and people to ensure safe plant operations.  Like all nuclear energy plants, Byron is subject to a rigorous program of NRC oversight and inspection of Byron's preventive and corrective maintenance, equipment replacement and extensive equipment testing programs.  These programs ensure nuclear plant equipment continues to meet safety standards, no matter how long the plant has been operating.

A Reliable Energy Source

Byron Generating Station is an always-on, stable source of electricity.  Reliability can be measured by capacity factor, which is the amount of electricity actually produced compared with how much electricity would be produced if the plant operated at full capacity, 100 percent of the time.  Byron’s average combined capacity factor was 89.7 percent in 2012.
