LaSalle Station Completes Scheduled Refuel Outage

Operators returned LaSalle County Generating Station Unit 2 to full power today, marking the successful conclusion of the station’s 14th scheduled refueling outage until the next refuel outage in two years.

MARSEILLES, Ill. (March 6, 2013) —Operators returned LaSalle County Generating Station Unit 2 to full power today, marking the successful conclusion of the station’s 14th scheduled refueling outage until the next refuel outage in two years. LaSalle Station Unit 2 was taken off line on Monday, Feb. 11. The refuel outage was completed in 21 days.

During the outage, Exelon employees and highly skilled supplemental workers performed more than 11,000 activities, including extensive safety inspections and tests, along with numerous plant improvements.
Workers replaced one-third of the reactor’s fuel, performed preventive maintenance activities and performed walkdowns and inspections of valves and power supply systems that could be needed in response to an earthquake or flood. All the work and inspections are designed to enhance the facility’s operational strength and ensure LaSalle’s ability to provide clean, safe and reliable electricity for another two-year operating cycle.
"It takes a great deal of hard work from very talented and dedicated people to safely and successfully disassemble, inspect, test and reassemble one of our reactors to ensure that it continues to run at peak performance,” said Pete Karaba, LaSalle Station site vice president.
More than 1,500 skilled workers from local union halls and technical experts from other Exelon Generation facilities supported LaSalle employees during the refueling outage.

LaSalle Unit 1 continued to operate at full power during the Unit 2 outage. LaSalle Generating Station is located about 75 miles southwest of Chicago near Marseilles, Ill. At full power, the facility’s two generating units produce more than 2,200 megawatts around the clock, enough electricity for 2.3 million typical homes.
