BYRON, Ill. - Byron Generating Station began the second phase of upgrading equipment today with teams of technical experts replacing insulators in the switchyard.
"This is the right opportunity to inspect, maintain and upgrade our switchyard and to help ensure the safe and reliable operation of both units through the peak summer months and beyond," said Byron Station Site Vice President Tim Tulon.
The station's Unit 2 turbine was taken offline this morning in order to perform the work. The same work was performed last weekend on the equipment that supports Byron Unit 1. Byron Unit 1 was brought back online Thursday, March 15.
Station personnel will perform additional upgrades to other equipment internal to the facility while the unit is offline.
Residents close to the plant will not see the normal steam being produced from the cooling towers while the unit remains at reduced power.
Unit 1 will continue to generate electricity while Unit 2 is at reduced power.
Byron Generating Station is in Ogle County, Ill., about 25 miles southwest of Rockford.
