BYRON, Ill. – The holiday helping spirit is in full swing at Byron Generating Station where employees have embarked on a number of recent events designed to help those in need. From clothing drives and toy drives to charitable contributions, it will definitely be a happier holiday season for some groups in Northern Illinois.

The station’s Goodwill committee just completed a winter clothing drive dedicated to homeless children in the Rockford area. Employees donated new and gently used children’s coats, hats, scarves, gloves and boots. More than 50 full winter outfits and another 85 coats were collected and distributed to local agencies including Shelter Care Ministries, the Remedies domestic violence program and Children’s Homeless Student Program, all of Rockford.

Kathy Hodge, an employee at the plant’s training center, led the collection and distribution effort.

“As the down economy continues there is word that more and more children than ever are homeless and in need of basic clothes to get through the winter season,” Hodge said. “This is a way for our employees to help out these children and the agencies that assist, especially as colder weather approaches.”

Last weekend an employee raffle at Byron Station raised $1,455 for the Salvation Army Mountain of Toys project. Employees also donated 900 pounds of food for the Rockford Rescue Mission. The station made additional monetary contributions to the Bread of Life food pantry in Stillman Valley and the Lifeline Food and Self Help Project of Oregon.

“Our employees have big hearts and they definitely showed it with all of their charitable actions,” said Byron Station Site Vice President Tim Tulon. “Hopefully the holidays will be a little brighter for those in need this time of year.”
