Braidwood Station Declares, Terminates Unusual Event
Operators at the Braidwood Generating Station declared and terminated an unusual event late at Braidwood Station this morning.
BRACEVILLE, Ill. - Operators at the Braidwood Generating Station declared and terminated an unusual event late this morning when a temporary hose used for maintenance work ruptured, placing water on two of the station’s four auxiliary feed pumps before the hose could be shut off.
Both Braidwood units continued to operate safely and at full power during this event. The station has four auxiliary feedwater pumps, two for each unit. One pump on each unit remains available for use.
The Unusual Event was declared at 10:26 a.m. and terminated at 11:22 a.m.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requires a station to declare an Unusual Event when water has the potential to affect safety related equipment needed for plant operations. Auxiliary feedwater pumps are backup safety-related equipment, and technicians are working to return them to service.
Exelon Nuclear personnel notified all appropriate federal, state and local government officials of the Unusual Event, the lowest of four emergency classifications as defined by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Braidwood Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The station’s two nuclear energy units can produce a total of more than 2,300 megawatts net at full power - enough electricity to power more than 2 million homes.
