Braidwood Station Unit 1 Returns to Service

Braidwood Unit 1 was placed back in service at 3:57 a.m. today.

BRACEVILLE, ILL - Braidwood Unit 1 was placed back in service at 3:57 a.m. today.  The unit automatically shutdown on Monday, Aug. 16 after water came in contact with an electrical bus
causing the system to denergize.

During the five-day shutdown, operators repaired the impacted electrical equipment. Neither the shutdown nor the subsequent steam release posed a threat to the health or safety of the public or plant workers.

Braidwood's Unit 2 reactor remains out of service. The reactor automatically shut down on Monday, Aug. 16 due to an electrical fault on the Unit 2 main generator. After making the necessary repairs and conducting electrical system testing, the unit will be returned to service.

“I want to thank our employees for their hard work in getting Unit 1 back in service,” Braidwood Station Site Vice President Amir Shahkarami said. “I also want to thank our nearby neighbors for their patience during the steam release. We will keep the public informed on our progress as we work to safely bring Unit 2 back on line.”

Braidwood Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The station’s two nuclear energy units can produce a total of more than 2,300 megawatts net at full power - enough electricity to power more than 2 million homes.
