Math and Science Education Gets a Boost from Exelon Nuclear with Donation to the 2010 North Museum Science and Engineering Fair

Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Provides Financial Support for a Second Year

Lancaster, PennsylvaniaPeach Bottom Atomic Power Station re-affirmed its dedication to developing students’ interest in math and science by recently donating $25,000 to the 2010 North Museum Science and Engineering Fair.

“The North Museum of Natural History & Science does a wonderful job providing an avenue for students to learn and excel in the fields of math and science,” said Bill Maguire, Peach Bottom site vice president.  “Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station is excited to be a part of this educational institution.”

Several Peach Bottom employees will serve as judges at the fair on March 24, 2010. This is the second year of the partnership between Exelon Nuclear and the North Museum, as Exelon Nuclear was the presenting sponsor of the 2009 North Museum Science and Engineering Fair.

North Museum Executive Director Margaret M. Marino said, “When the Museum took over the Fair’s operation, Exelon Nuclear’s generous sponsorship enabled us to provide an exceptional educational experience for Lancaster County students. We are delighted to have a partner who shares our commitment to getting young people excited about science and giving them hands-on opportunities to explore the natural and physical world. The North Museum is deeply grateful for Exelon Nuclear’s financial support.”

Since its inception in 1953, the county science fair has grown from a small affair with 39 participants to a three-day exposition with more than 900 students registering for the chance to compete. Only the top 350 students will present their research projects at this year’s event. Two high school students will earn a trip to the 2010 Intel International Science & Engineering Fair, which will be held in San Jose, California, in May.

NOTE TO EDITORS AND REPORTERS: Garey Stathes, Peach Bottom plant manager, will present a check to the North Museum Science Fair representatives on March 24, 2010 at 6:15 p.m. at Franklin & Marshall College’s Alumni Sports and Fitness Center.
