Limerick Unit 1 Off-Line For Planned Refueling and Maintenance Outage

Limerick Unit 1 sets station reliability record of 727 days.

Pottstown, Pennsylvania - Operators safely took Limerick Generating Station Unit 1 off-line for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage shortly after midnight EDT Monday, March 22.

The beginning of this refueling outage completes a successful run of 727 days for Unit 1 and sets a new continuous run record at Limerick.  This also represents the second longest continuous run for a boiling water reactor in the United States.

“Unit 1 has been online for almost two years, which represents a new record for reliability for Limerick Generating Station,” said Chris Mudrick, Limerick site vice president.  “The team has been preparing for this outage for more than a year and we are now ready to execute our plan safely and efficiently.  A successful refueling outage will help us to safely and reliably operate the unit during the next two years.”

During the outage, workers will perform approximately 14,000 activities on a variety of plant components and systems. This includes replacing approximately a third of the reactor’s fuel and performing a series of extensive inspections. Many of the activities performed during the outage cannot be performed while the plant is running, and all are designed to ensure the safe and reliable production of carbon-free electricity through the 24-month operating cycle.

To support this effort, the station will utilize the talents and expertise of close to 1,900 additional workers. These men and women are skilled workers from other Exelon sites, local union halls, travelers from outside the area and specialized vendors. They all provide a temporary benefit for the local economy.

Limerick Unit 2 will continue to generate electricity during the Unit 1 outage.  Limerick Generating Station is located approximately 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia.  With both units at full power, the site can produce enough carbon-free electricity for 2 million homes.
