Quad Cities Unit 2 Off-line For Planned Refueling and Maintenance

Station operators safely took Exelon Nuclear’s Quad Cities Generating Station Unit 2 off-line for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage shortly after midnight this morning.

Cordova, Illinois - Station operators safely took Exelon Nuclear's Quad Cities Generating Station Unit 2 off-line for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage shortly after midnight this morning.

During the outage, workers will perform approximately 13,000 extensive inspections and tests on a wide range of components and equipment in addition to refueling the reactor.  This work includes the replacement of all three low-pressure turbines and casings.  Many of the activities performed during the outage cannot be done while the unit is operating. All the work is designed to ensure the unit's safe and reliable production of electricity through its operating cycle.

During this outage, nearly 2,100 skilled workers from other Exelon sites, local union halls, and numerous communities and other states will be in the area, which provides a temporary benefit for the local economy.

Quad Cities Unit 1 will continue to generate electricity while Unit 2 is off-line.  Quad Cities Generating Station is located approximately 125 miles west of Chicago.  With both units at full power, the site can produce enough electricity for more than 1 million homes.
