Three Mile Island Unit 1 Taken Off Line for Maintenance Repairs
Operators took Three Mile Island Unit 1 (TMI-1) offline today at 3:02 a.m. to perform maintenance on two reactor coolant pumps.
Londonderry Township, Pennsylvania – Operators took Three Mile Island Unit 1 (TMI-1) offline today at 3:02 a.m. to perform maintenance on two reactor coolant pumps. The maintenance work involves repairing small oil leaks on both pumps. While the plant is offline personnel will also perform electrical maintenance work on the Isolation Phase Bus Bar in the Turbine Building.
The repairs on the reactor coolant pumps can only be performed with the plant offline. After the work is completed, operators will connect the unit to the power grid and return the plant to full power.
TMI -1 had been operating at full power since returning to service from a refueling and maintenance outage on January 24, 2010.
Three Mile Island generates 852 megawatts of carbon free electricity, enough power for more than 800,000 homes.
