MARSEILLES, Ill. (July 18, 2009) - Operators at LaSalle County Generating Station took Unit 1 offline at 5:52 a.m. today as part of a planned maintenance outage to replace a seal on a pump that circulates water through the reactor.
The pump seal replacement is a proactive step that will help ensure the continued safe, reliable operation of the unit.
The work, which cannot be performed while the unit is operating, is being done to address a slight change in performance of the pump seal. While the seal is still functioning within operating guidelines, plant officials made the decision to take Unit 1 offline to replace it.
The LaSalle Unit 1 maintenance outage will not have an impact on electrical service to Exelon customers. Unit 2 will continue to run at full power, producing carbon-free electricity for customers.
LaSalle County Generating Station is located approximately 75 miles southwest of Chicago. With both units at full power, the site produces more than 2,200 megawatts net, which is enough electricity for 2.3 million homes.
