FORKED RIVER, NJ. (Jan. 6, 2009) - While generating electricity is its core business, Exelon Nuclear's Oyster Creek Generating Station prides itself on being a good neighbor and donated about $389,000 in 2008 to a wide range of organizations in communities surrounding the station.
"Oyster Creek strives to be a good neighbor and a good corporate citizen," said Tim Rausch, Site Vice President. "In addition to sponsoring various events and contributing to worthwhile organizations in the area, many of our employees volunteer their time and talents to help those in need."
Rausch noted that the bulk of last year's donations came from personal donations by the employees of Oyster Creek when they gave $277,000 to the United Way of Ocean County.
"Our company and employees place great value on community commitment. We're proud to be recognized as a leader in Ocean County for our employees' generosity," Rausch said. "We know there are many groups and organizations that need our support, and I'm proud to say that our company and employees recognize and accept this responsibility. We'll continue live up to our commitments in 2009."
"United Way of Ocean County thanks Oyster Creek for its strong support of our programs," said Lisa Giannascoli, interim executive director of UWOC. "We are extremely appreciative of Oyster Creek's continued commitment to United Way of Ocean County."
Some of the other area organizations and events that have received support from Oyster Creek include:
Borough of Beachwood
Bayville Volunteer Fire Company No. 1
Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore
Southern Ocean County Hospital
Lacey Girls Softball League
Marine Mammal Stranding Center
Barnegat Bay Decoy & Baymens Museum
Lacey Food Bank
"In many cases, our employees have direct ties with the organizations we support and we try to help where we can," Rausch said. "We're glad to assist them when possible."
