Byron Station Workers Complete Unit 1 Refueling Outage

Operators returned Byron Generating Station Unit 1 to full power Sunday following the unit’s 18th refueling outage.

BYRON, Ill. - Operators returned Byron Generating Station Unit 1 to full power Sunday following the unit's 18th refueling outage.

During the outage, Exelon employees and more than 2,200 supplemental workers performed more than 14,000 activities, including equipment upgrades, safety inspections, tests, and plant improvements. The unit was taken off line Sept. 10.

Among projects completed was an upgrade of the Unit 1 cooling tower.

"The large amount of work completed will ensure the unit's safe and reliable run through its next two-year operating cycle," said Tim Tulon, Byron Station's site vice president.

Byron Unit 2 continued to operate during the Unit 1 refueling outage.

The Byron Station is in Ogle County, Ill., about 25 miles southwest of Rockford. With both units at full power, the site produces almost 2,300 megawatts, enough electricity for about 2.3 million typical homes.
