Region Gets Millions in Economic Boost as Braidwood Station Refueling Outage Begins

More than $2 million is being spent with local vendors in support of the Braidwood Generating Station Unit 2 scheduled refueling and maintenance outage that began at 11 p.m. last night.

Braceville, Illinois - More than $2 million is being spent with local vendors in support of the Braidwood Generating Station Unit 2 scheduled refueling and maintenance outage that began at 11 p.m. last night.

“In these challenging economic times we are fortunate to have companies like Exelon continuing to invest in their Braidwood facility,” said John Greuling, Center for Economic Development President & CEO. “Exelon’s refueling project is a major win-win for the local labor force, vendors and suppliers and the community as a whole.”

During the maintenance outage, workers will perform more than 9,500 inspections and maintenance activities on a variety of plant components and systems. This includes replacing one-third of the reactor’s fuel. Many of the activities performed during the maintenance outage cannot be performed while the unit is operating.

To complete the project, the station will employ the talents and expertise of more than 1,600 additional workers – many of whom are from local union halls. Other workers are from nearby Exelon Nuclear sites and specialty vendors who travel to the area for the outage.

“The additional support from our temporary workers and local vendors is a vital part of our overall refueling outage plan,” said Braidwood Station Site Vice President Dan Enright. “The work performed during the outage will enhance the station’s ability to provide safe, reliable, carbon-free electricity for many years to come.”

Braidwood Unit 1 will continue to supply electricity to the area while Unit 2 is offline.

Braidwood Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The station’s two nuclear energy units can produce a total of more than 2,300 megawatts net at full power - enough electricity to power more than 2 million homes.
