BYRON, Ill. - Operators at Byron Generating Station manually took the station's Unit 2 reactor offline at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 for the planned replacement of a pressure relief valve.
Replacement of the valve and additional maintenance tasks will ensure the unit's run through the peak summer months.
"This is a good opportunity for station personnel to perform maintenance and inspections that will enhance Unit 2's safe production through the hotter summer period," said Tim Tulon, Byron Station site vice president.
Byron's Unit 1 will continue to supply clean electricity to Exelon customers during the Unit 2 outage. With both units at full power, the site produces 2,286 megawatts net, enough electricity for 2.3 million homes.
