Peach Bottom Unit 3 Returned to Service

Workers replace main power transformer, perform maintenance to advance equipment reliability

DELTA, PA (November 20, 2010) – Operators at Exelon Nuclear’s Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station safely returned Unit 3 to service today at 7:10 a.m. ET after a safe and successful maintenance outage. During the five-day outage, workers replaced one of the station’s main power transformers and performed a number of maintenance tasks that can only be performed while the unit is offline.

Four of Peach Bottom’s six main power transformers have already been replaced as part of Exelon’s $87 million investment to advance long-term equipment reliability at the station. The station’s Unit 3 ‘B’ transformer, one of two remaining units that have been in service since 1974, was replaced this week with a spare unit of similar vintage. The replacement unit will remain in service until the station’s two new transformers are placed in service next fall.

Site Vice President Tom Dougherty said, “This maintenance outage helps make sure we prepare the plant for future reliable operations, especially in the summer months when the region needs the plant’s electricity the most.”

Peach Bottom’s Unit 2 reactor continued to run at full power during the transition. The station is home to two boiling water reactors, which jointly produce over 2,200 megawatts of carbon-free electricity, powering more than two million homes.
