Oyster Creek Generating Station Annual Siren Test Scheduled For June 2

Exelon, in cooperation with Ocean County and the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, will conduct its annual three-minute full volume siren test for Oyster Creek Generating Station's emergency planning zone at approximately 10 a.m. EDT on Tuesday,

FORKED RIVER, N.J. (May 29, 2009) - Exelon, in cooperation with Ocean County and the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, will conduct its annual three-minute full volume siren test for Oyster Creek Generating Station's emergency planning zone at approximately 10 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, June 2.
The 42-siren system, located within the 10-mile radius of the plant, will be activated for approximately three minutes.  A second test will be conducted at 2 p.m. to test the siren's redundant back-up system for approximately 30 seconds.
The warning sirens are one of several methods used by emergency management authorities to provide notification of emergencies. The county may activate the sirens to warn the surrounding community of threatening events such as fires, floods, tornados, hazardous material releases, or nuclear energy plant events.
The annual siren testing is part of Exelon’s comprehensive emergency preparedness program.  Oyster Creek conducts electronic testing of the sirens on a weekly basis.
The sirens are not a signal to evacuate. In an actual emergency, residents should tune to one of the county Emergency Alert System radio or television stations for further information. Should a siren fail to activate, local police and firefighters would alert residents using mobile public address systems or door-to-door notifications.
