Operators at Oyster Creek Generating Station declared an "unusual event" at 2:55 p.m. EDT Wednesday, after an equipment malfunction occurred during start up procedures. The equipment was secured, and the event was terminated at 3:37 p.m.

During start-up of the reactor, a recirculation pump seal malfunctioned. As per plant procedures, operators declared the unusual event when the pump malfunctioned. Recirculation pumps move water through the reactor during power operations.

An unusual event is the lowest emergency level in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's emergency classification system. Exelon Nuclear personnel notified all appropriate federal, state and local government officials of the unusual event.

There were no injuries to plant personnel, and there was no threat to the health and safety of the public associated with this event.

Oyster Creek is located approximately 60 miles east of Philadelphia. The plant produces 636 net megawatts of electricity per hour, enough carbon free energy for approximately 600,000 homes, the equivalent of all of the homes in Mercer, Burlington and Ocean counties.
