Drinker Biddle, Exelon Partner on Pro Bono Clinic

The Exelon legal department and Drinker Biddle lawyers, in conjunction with the National Immigrant Justice Center, hosted a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals legal clinic.

The Exelon legal department and Drinker Biddle lawyers, in conjunction with the National Immigrant Justice Center, today hosted a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) legal clinic at Drinker Biddle’s Chicago office.

Exelon and Drinker Biddle attorneys work with the National Immigrant Justice Center to provide volunteer legal services.

In 2012, Secretary of Homeland Security Napolitano announced a process to allow undocumented individuals who were brought to the United States as young children (and who meet certain eligibility requirements) to remain and legally work in the United States for up to two years.  Lawyers and staff from Drinker Biddle and Exelon assisted applicants in filling out the necessary paperwork required for this deferred action approval.

“We are honored that our client, Exelon, would partner with us in this very worthy endeavor,” said Jesse Ruiz, partner in Drinker Biddle’s Chicago office.  “We pride ourselves on our commitment to our clients and our community, so our involvement in this effort was an easy choice.  The overwhelming support from our lawyers and staff toward this effort speaks volumes.”

Forty-five members of the Exelon legal department, including Exelon General Counsel Darryl Bradford,  and 50 Drinker Biddle lawyers and staff assisted with the clinic.  Approximately 40 DACA applicants (and family members) pre-registered for the event.

“As an active corporate citizen, Exelon takes its responsibility to the community seriously, and pro bono service is an important part of that,” Bradford said.  “We’re pleased to partner with Drinker Biddle and the National Immigrant Justice Center to help young Chicagoans who otherwise may not have access to critical legal services.”

In recognition of Exelon’s, commitment to volunteer legal service, the American Bar Association earlier this month announced that the energy company would receive the 2013 Pro Bono Publico Award.
