Exelon, East Coventry Officials Unveil Restored Frick’s Lock Village

Innovative community partnership preserves some of the oldest buildings in Chester County

POTTSTOWN, PA– Representatives from Exelon Generation, East Coventry Township and Chester County gathered with elected officials and other guests today to celebrate the completion of the Frick’s Lock Rehabilitation Project and tour several newly-renovated buildings.

Exelon and East Coventry Township recently completed an innovative, multi-year preservation project to stabilize and rehabilitate several structures near Limerick Generating Station that once comprised the historic canal community known as Frick’s Lock Village. The structures are some of the oldest buildings still standing in Chester County. Exelon invested $2.3 million in the community development project and plans to lease the property to East Coventry Township for public tours.

"The rehabilitation of Frick’s Lock Village was a true community partnership," said Chris Mudrick, Exelon Senior VP of Mid-Atlantic Operations. "The Township had a clear vision for transforming this historic site into a community attraction and Exelon was happy to help make that vision a reality."

The project’s steering committee included representatives from Exelon, East Coventry Township and Historical Commission, Chester County Parks and Recreation, the Schuylkill River Heritage Area and State Senator Andy Dinniman’s office.

"The realization of Frick’s Locks Village as a historical site and destination within the Township is very exciting," said Mariea Geho, Vice Chair, East Coventry Township Board of Supervisors. "The rehabilitation work performed by Exelon has given the Village renewed life and brought our history into focus. The community has benefitted from our partnership with Exelon to preserve Frick’s Lock Village."

Frick's Lock Village was founded more than 250 years ago and served as a key stop along the Schuylkill Canal and Pennsylvania Railroad. Several of the historic structures in the village date from the 1850s. In 2003, the village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The project was selected to receive a 2013 Preservation Achievement Grand Jury Award from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia.
