MARSEILLES, Ill. (Mar. 7, 2011) – Operators at Exelon Nuclear’s LaSalle County Generating Station returned Unit 2 to the electrical grid at 5:36 p.m., safely completing a planned refueling and maintenance outage that began Feb. 14.

MARSEILLES, Ill. (Mar. 7, 2011) – Operators at Exelon Nuclear’s LaSalle County Generating Station returned Unit 2 to the electrical grid at 5:36 p.m., safely completing a planned refueling and maintenance outage that began Feb. 14.

“We completed an impressive amount of work during the outage that will help ensure the safe and reliable production of carbon-free electricity during the unit’s next two-year operating cycle and beyond,” said LaSalle Station Site Vice President Dave Rhoades.

In addition to replacing about one-third of the reactor’s fuel, workers performed more than 13,500 inspections and maintenance activities on a variety of plant components and systems that cannot be done while the unit is operating.

During the outage, the station employed the talents and expertise of approximately 2,100 additional skilled workers. About 1,100 of the workers came from local union halls, while others were from nearby Exelon Nuclear sites and specialty vendors who traveled to the area for the outage.

In addition, LaSalle spent approximately $2 million with local vendors from LaSalle and other nearby counties on rental equipment, construction contractors and specialty services to support the outage.

LaSalle Unit 1 continued to supply electricity to the area while Unit 2 was offline.

LaSalle Station is located approximately 75 miles southwest of Chicago. With both units at full power, the site produces 2,286 megawatts net, which is enough electricity for 2.3 million homes.
