MARSEILLES, Ill - LaSalle Generating Station Unit 1 automatically shut down at 7:18 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, when a main power transformer tripped off-line.
A main power transformer is a piece of plant equipment that raises the voltage of electricity before it is sent to the electrical grid.
The plant responded as expected, safely and without incident. While the cause of the shutdown is under investigation, station operators are focusing on a possible fault on the transformer.
Electrical power outages from the current winter storm are not related to the Unit 1 shutdown.
LaSalle Station is located approximately 75 miles southwest of Chicago. With both units at full power, the site produces 2,286 megawatts net, which is enough electricity for 2.3 million homes.
