Peach Bottom Returns Unit 2 to Service After Safe and Successful Refueling Outage

Exelon Invests $60 Million to Upgrade Plant Equipment, Ensure Long-Term Reliability

DELTA, PA (October 8, 2010) – Operators at Exelon Nuclear’s Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station returned Unit 2 to the electrical grid today at approximately 12:30 p.m. ET, safely completing a planned biennial maintenance and refueling outage that began Sept. 12.

Several major equipment upgrades were completed during this year’s planned outage, including a complete overhaul of the Unit 2 generator and installation of three main power transformers, both of which will help ensure long-term equipment reliability.

While Unit 2 was offline, 2,600 Exelon employees and supplemental workers performed more than 15,000 inspections and maintenance activities on plant components. This included replacing nearly a third of the reactor’s fuel. Many of these activities cannot be performed while the reactor is operating.

“This year’s Unit 2 refueling outage was a great way to end two consecutive breaker-to-breaker runs and lay the groundwork for a third,” said Peach Bottom Site Vice President Tom Dougherty. “Much of the work accomplished this fall will help ensure safe and reliable power generation at Peach Bottom for many years to come.”

Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station utilized the talents and expertise of more than 1,500 supplemental workers to support the outage. Many of the workers travel to Peach Bottom from outside the area, providing a significant boost to the local economy during the outage period.

Peach Bottom has two boiling water reactors, which jointly produce over 2,200 megawatts of electricity, powering more than two million homes.  Peach Bottom Unit 3 continued to run at full power during the outage.
