MARSEILLES, Ill. (June 21, 2010) – Exelon Nuclear’s LaSalle County Generating Station is helping ensure that the children of Streator return to the baseball and softball diamonds as quickly as possible.

Station employees stepped up to the plate by raising $13,000 through a series of fund-raisers that have occurred since the June 5 tornados that swept through the community.

According to Streator Mayor Jimmie Lansford, the city will use a majority of the donation to refurbish ball fields that were destroyed by the epicenter of the storms, including replacing lighting, bleachers, scoreboards and fencing. City officials will use a portion of the donation to support other clean-up efforts in the community.

“The City of Streator appreciates the amazing amount of support that we’ve received from the people who work at LaSalle Station,” Lansford said. “This generous donation will make a huge impact as our community continues to pick up the pieces.”

LaSalle Station has a strong tradition of involvement in local organizations in the communities near the plant. The station makes charitable contributions to a wide range of local organizations to help improve community, educational, environmental and recreational initiatives.

“Baseball and softball are American past-times, and many of our area youth look forward to the camaraderie that they enjoy on the ball fields,” said LaSalle Site Vice President Dave Wozniak. “When we heard of the devastation that occurred after the tornados, our employees quickly banded together to help our neighbors in Streator.”

In addition to the donation to the City of Streator, LaSalle Station has contributed more than $35,000 to local organizations so far in 2010.

Exelon Nuclear is the largest nuclear generating company in the nation. LaSalle County Generating Station is located approximately 75 miles southwest of Chicago. With both units at full power, the site produces more than 2,200 megawatts net, which is enough electricity for 2.3 million homes.
