Kennett Square, PA (March 12, 2009) - Exelon Generation Company, LLC filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) a Pre-Application Document (PAD) and Notification of Intent (NOI) to file a new license application for the Conowingo Hydroelectric Project. The project is located in Harford and Cecil Counties, Maryland on the Susquehanna River.
The filings are part of a multi-year re-licensing process for the Conowingo Dam.
The Pre-Application Document or the PAD contains existing information about the project. The Notice of Intent, or NOI is just that; Exelon's notice to FERC that it intends to seek re-licensing of the project using FERC's integrated licensing process.
Conowingo Hydroelectric station has been providing clean energy since 1928. The original plant had seven turbines providing 252 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Over the years additional turbines have been added and older equipment updated. Today, Conowingo provides 573 MW of electricity or enough energy to power nearly one half million homes (1 MW = roughly 800 homes). Conowingo's current license runs through August 31, 2014.
Copies of the PAD are available for public inspection during regular business hours at the Darlington Public Library, 1134 Main St., Darlington in Harford County.
