FORKED RIVER, NJ. (Jan. 22, 2009) - Later today, Exelon will give the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) a nearly 400-page summary of the 3D analysis that shows that Oyster Creek’s drywell shell has adequate safety margins in excess of those required by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code. The summary confirms that there is sufficient margin in the thickness of drywell shell to help ensure continued safe operations at Oyster Creek through the 20-year license renewal period.
Exelon voluntarily undertook and submitted this analysis three months ahead of the NRC’s scheduled deadline of April 2009. The analysis was completed on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009. Oyster Creek invested in this more detailed modeling and analysis to provide greater assurance for our stakeholders. The entire 3D analysis, which contains a computer model and proprietary calculations, is available to the NRC and the state of New Jersey.
The summaries are not proprietary, and will be available to the public through the NRC’s Agency-wide Documents and Access Management System (ADAMS).
The analysis was performed by Structural Integrity Associates of San Jose, Calif. and includes a description of the drywell, a description of the finite element model and an ASME Code stress and buckling evaluation.
