MORRIS, Ill. (May 9, 2014) — Dresden Generating Station is rolling out the red carpet for area residents – inviting all to an informative, hands-on event on station property. The nuclear plant’s annual community open house is scheduled from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 17, in the station’s training building located at 6500 North Dresden Road in Morris.

“More than 225 people attended our last open house,” said Dresden Station Vice President Shane Marik. “This event is a terrific opportunity for residents to see what we do at Dresden Station and how safety is the number-one priority for us each day.”

Attendees can talk one-on-one with employees about station operations, environmental stewardship, security, safety, emergency preparedness and more. Visitors will also be able to tour the station’s control room simulator, which is where operator training is conducted. No plant tours are available during the open house. The event is free and light refreshments will be served.

Those attending the open house must bring a state issued ID. Children without an ID must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Also, firearms, ammunition, fireworks and alcoholic beverages are not allowed on Dresden property.

Residents who have questions about the event or Dresden Station can call Dresden Communications Manager Bob Osgood at 815-416-3743.

Dresden Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The station’s two nuclear energy units can produce a total of more than 1,800 megawatts at full power – enough carbon free electricity to power more than 1.2 million typical homes. Dresden Unit 1, which began commercial operation in 1960 and was retired in 1978, has been designated a Nuclear Historic Landmark by the American Nuclear Society.
