Investments in Reliability
ComEd has invested more than $9 billion since the late 1990s in its electric transmission and distribution system to continue providing its customers with quality service. ComEd is working on a 10-year plan under the Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act that will take the electric system into the future and meet customers’ ever-expanding needs.
Over the next 10 years, ComEd will invest $2.6 billion in infrastructure upgrades and smart grid technologies. These investments will result in improved system reliability, enhanced customer service and a modern electric distribution system – one that will support the greener, digital economy of the future.
The beginning phase incorporates technologies that are proven to result in fewer and shorter outages, and that provide customers with real-time data to make smarter choices about electricity use. This technology includes advanced smart meters and distribution automation equipment.
Performance and Service
ComEd understands how important safe, reliable power is to its customers. Since 1998, ComEd has reduced the number of power outages by 54% and the duration of outages by 59%.
Safety is a core Exelon value which ComEd emphasizes through its safety programs for employees, contractors, customers and communities. ComEd maintains emergency-response and storm-readiness plans, which it tests with multiple drills throughout the year.
As part of Exelon 2020, ComEd is working to demonstrate its environmental commitment.
- Customer Programs. ComEd recently completed a 3-year, $235 million energy efficiency program that targets residential and commercial energy savings. The program, Smart Ideas, is expected to produce lifetime electricity savings of more than 11 million MWh. Combined, ComEd’s energy efficiency and demand response programs have already saved customers over 1,260,000 MWh of electricity.
- Greening Operations. ComEd has reduced energy consumption across its commercial facilities. System and process improvements, such as the installation of lighting and occupancy sensors at several facilities contributed to this reduction.
With a corporate history dating back to the early days of electric service in Chicago, ComEd long has been a responsible corporate citizen in northern Illinois.
- Sponsorship. ComEd is proud to sponsor festivals and events throughout its service territory, providing an opportunity to interact with customers and show support for important causes. One of the company’s largest sponsorship activities is supporting holiday lighting festivals, including Lincoln Park Zoo’s Zoo Lights, Brookfield Zoo’s Holiday Magic, Chicago Botanic Garden’s Wonderland Express, and Rialto Square Theatre’s Festival of Trees in Joliet.
- Grants. Since its founding 100 years ago, ComEd has partnered with non-profit organizations to improve the lives of its customers. Funding is focused on organizations that make a positive impact on math and science education in K-12 schools, the environment and arts and culture.
