Long-term wind power purchase agreements

Exelon Generation purchases more than 350 megawatts (MW) of wind power—enough electricity to power 100,000 homes—from wind farms in Illinois, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Renewables
Exelon’s energy portfolio of owned and contracted renewable power has more than 2,000 MW of hydro, wind, landfill gas and solar power
PJM Interconnection
PJM is a regional transmission organization that independently operates the high-voltage interconnected power grid and oversees the competitive wholesale power market for 13 Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern states and Washington, D.C.

Wind Investment

Wind power is a source of clean, renewable energy and creates jobs and revenue for landowners and local communities. Exelon is the largest wholesale marketer of wind energy east of the Mississippi with 350 MW.

  • Exelon Generation has long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with four wind generation projects in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, providing a total wind capacity of 154 MW for sale by Exelon Power Team and Exelon Energy.
  • In 2009, Exelon Power Team acquired 198 MW of output from a wind farm near Bloomington, Illinois, as part of Exelon 2020, our environmental and business strategy.
  • With its Mid-Atlantic wind generation portfolio exceeding 154 MW, Exelon has committed to providing clean, environmentally-friendly power generation to customers located throughout the PJM interconnection.
  • Residential and commercial customers of PECO, one of Exelon’s delivery companies, have the option to purchase PECO WIND, which supplies 160,000 megawatt-hours (MWh)of power annually to more than 38,000 customers and was named one of the top 10 utility green power programs in the country.
Environmental Commitment
As part of Exelon 2020, Exelon opened the Renewable Energy Education Center in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, in October 2008. The center features interactive educational exhibits on landfill gas, wind, solar, and hydro power, as well as energy conservation.

The primary demand for wind energy comes from utilities and commercial customers, including universities and government agencies, who want green power. Increasingly the focus is on compliance demand associated with Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) laws in many states, including Maryland, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania. New RPS requirements are also expected to be considered in other states and at the federal level in the future.

Community

Exelon aims to be a good neighbor within our local communities with active involvement through sponsorships, charitable giving and volunteering focusing on the environment, education, the arts and diversity. We encourage our employees to give back to their communities and we recognize their efforts through various programs.

Wind Power Plants

Exelon does not own any wind power plants.  Following are the wind power plants from which we purchase electricity.

Mill Run Wind Farm

Mill Run Wind Farm

Mill Run Wind Energy Center is a 10-turbine, 15-MW wind farm located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. Mill Run produces enough energy to power 5,700 average American homes. Exelon entered into a 20-year agreement in 2001 to purchase the output of Mill Run Wind Farm.

Fayette County, Pennsylvania
Mountaineer Wind Energy Center

Mountaineer Wind Energy Center

Mountaineer Wind Energy Center is a 44-turbine, 66-MW wind farm located in Tucker & Preston Counties, West Virginia. When it came online in December 2002, Mountaineer was the first wind farm in West Virginia and the largest east of the Mississippi River. Exelon entered into a 20-year agreement in 2003 to purchase the output of Mountaineer Wind Energy Center.

Thomas, West Virginia
Old Trail Wind Farm

Old Trail Wind Farm

Old Trail Wind Farm is a 120-turbine, 198-MW wind farm located in Bloomington, Illinois. Exelon entered into a 17-year agreement in 2009 to purchase the energy and Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) output of the Old Trail Wind Farm.

Bloomington, Illinois
Somerset Wind Energy Center

Somerset Wind Energy Center

Somerset Wind Energy Center is a six-turbine, 9-MW wind farm located in Somerset, Pennsylvania. Together, the 1.5-megawatt turbines at Somerset produce about 25,000 megawatt-hours, enough electricity to power 3,400 average American homes. Exelon entered into a 20-year agreement in 2001 to purchase the output of Somerset Wind Energy Center.

Somerset, Pennsylvania
Waymart Wind Energy Center

Waymart Wind Energy Center

Waymart Wind Energy Center is a 43-turbine, 64.5-MW wind farm located in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. It is the largest wind power generation facility in Pennsylvania. Together the 1.5-MW turbines at Waymart generate enough energy to power more than 20,000 average American homes annually. Exelon entered into a 20-year agreement in 2002 to purchase the output of Waymart Wind Energy Center.
