A diverse portfolio of responsible coal, oil and natural gas generation

Exelon Generation, through its subsidiary Exelon Power, owns and operates a fossil generation portfolio that consists of baseload, intermediate and peaking stations, located in nine states and in Canada.

Exelon’s fossil power plants produce over 12,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity.  A diverse fuel mix of coal, oil and natural gas allows Exelon to remain competitive in the deregulated utility market by ensuring power during intermediate shoulder seasons and peak demand times.  Exelon’s peaker plants provide supplementary power for use during periods of high demand.

Environmental Commitment
In 2009, Exelon Power reused 82%, or more than 107,000 tons, of its coal combustion and scrubber byproducts in beneficial applications.

Fossil Investment

Fossil fuel plants play a key role in the supply of reliable power.  According to the U.S. Department of Energy, they provide nearly 2/3 of the nation’s electricity, including peak demand periods.  Exelon has sold or retired most of its coal plants and works to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at its fossil plants that remain in operation to cost-effectively meet demand.

  • Advancing Clean Coal Technologies.  As part of the effort to reduce GHG emissions, many research projects for the development of “clean coal” plants are underway. Unfortunately, carbon capture and sequestration technology is not yet proven or economically feasible and additional government support is needed. In February 2010, Exelon announced its intent to join the FutureGen Alliance as part of a two-part project to advance clean coal technologies.  The Alliance is a public-private partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy and leading domestic and international companies.

The Department of Energy recently announced a revised plan for the FutureGen project, called “FutureGen 2.0.” that consists of two parts.

  • FutureGen 2.0
    • Repowering an existing power plant with oxycombustion technology to capture 90% of the plant’s CO2 emissions.
    • Developing a regional CO2 storage hub to transport catured CO2 and permanently store it in an  underground salien formation at a site to be selected in Illinois.
  • Natural Gas. As part of our business and environment strategy, Exelon 2020, we have evaluated the economic merit of alternatives to abate GHG emissions in the electricity sector.  New natural gas combined-cycle plants continue to be the most economic new-build option.  However, with demand low and many power markets still saturated with generating capacity, new plants are simply not needed.  There will be ample opportunity to invest in new natural gas plants, but only when they are required to meet demand.

Safety and Performance

All Exelon facilities employ sophisticated emergency response plans to protect public health and safety. These plans are reviewed and approved by state governments and regulatory agencies. The emergency planning includes coordination with local counties, municipalities and school districts.

Exelon continues to pursue improvements in the efficiency and thermal performance of our fossil generating plants

  • In 2009, our fossil fleet had the best summer commercial availability factor in 5 years (93.7%), demonstrating our ability to meet and leverage peak demand periods.
  • GHG emissions from Exelon’s fossil generating plants decreased by 4.2% from 2008 levels primarily due to a decrease in demand.  Since 2001, we have reduced fossil generation emissions by more than 5.8 million metric tons.
  • Most of these our early Exelon 2020 greenhouse gas reductionsns, yielded from Exelon 2020 so far,  were achieved by focusing on opportunities within Exelon’s own operations, including retiring or “mothballing” less efficient and higher-emitting fossil fuel power plants in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Texas.
  • Exelon Power has worked with PJM Interconnection to retire four fossil units.  In 2011, Exelon Power permanently retired three fossil burning units, two units at Cromby Generating Station and one unit at Eddystone Generating Station.  Another fossil unit at Eddystone will retire in May 2012.
